Abstract

Modern religious education institutions contribute greatly in increasing religiosity for the community, especially in urban communities. This paper examines the Islamic Center Mu'adz bin Jabal (ICM) as the preference of the Kendari city community as the locus of religious and pious education. This study uses a Pusaka Jurnal Khazanah Keagamaan, Vol. 10, No. 1, 2022 21 sociological religious approach with data collection using interview and observation techniques. The results of the study found that there were six reasons the people of Kendari city made ICM a religious preference due to first, adequate infrastructure; second, a solid educational curriculum; third, the program based on the regeneration of imams and tahfidz; fourth, complete religious social services; fifth, the use of contemporary information and da'wah media; and sixth, the performance of Arabic as a reference for Islam. The appeal of ICM extends and targets almost all segments and worship needs of the Muslim community in urban areas. This study argues that the tendency of people to choose institutions is caused by the strength of internal attraction and is legitimized by the Arab branding as authentic Islam. ICM's performance, which represents Arabs, has become an attraction for urban communities in Kendari City. The strength of this attraction eventually formed the Muslim community, especially the upper middleclass segment of society.
